Modernizing a 1950s
Bathroom into a Luxurious Spa Retreat
The Art of Elevating Small Spaces
This bathroom remodel began with a modest 6' x 8' space—a cramped, no-frills full bath dating back to the 1950s. The fixtures were outdated, the layout inefficient, and it no longer met the homeowners' needs.
This small, unremarkable space held big potential. The homeowners dreamed of transforming it into a luxurious retreat inspired by the spa-like bathrooms they had encountered during their travels. Their vision was clear: a space that blended cultures, textures, and colors to create a harmonious sanctuary where beauty and relaxation could coexist.
Every design decision, from the choice of materials to the placement of fixtures, was carefully made to bring that dream to life—elevating the small bathroom into a personal, indulgent escape.
Overcoming Challenges: Precise Execution in a Tight Space
A primary obstacle we faced was the demolition and construction within an extremely confined area, where precision in every detail and installation was critical. Any deviation of even a fraction of an inch from the specifications could mean the distinction between a successful installation and the need to begin again.
AFTER
Blending Form and Function in a Modern Shower Space
Bringing our client’s vision to life required thoughtful attention to detail and creative problem-solving. Two standout features were central to the design: the incorporation of floating teak shelves and the precise installation of inset granite slabs to house the shower fixtures in a sleek, curbless shower with a linear drain.
Each element presented unique challenges. For the teak shelving, achieving the desired “floating” effect with no visible brackets required both craftsmanship and precision. Stainless steel pins were carefully embedded into the wall framing, aligning perfectly with holes drilled into the back of the teak. This invisible support system gave the shelves their seamless, weightless appearance.
The granite slabs, on the other hand, demanded exacting precision. The plumbing rough-ins had to be meticulously placed to accommodate them, which were designed to sit slightly raised—exactly 1/2 inch—above the surrounding tile. This subtle elevation added dimension and elegance to the shower while maintaining the clean, modern aesthetic the client envisioned.
Imported Tiles, Granite, and High-End Fixtures with Cutting-Edge Technology
The new bathroom space boasted design features, including imported tile, granite, and high-end boutique fixtures and fittings. Extensive electrical and plumbing modifications were required to install low-voltage circuitry to support the functions of two Robern-lighted medicine cabinets equipped with Wi-Fi Bluetooth technology.
The Final Result
The final result was nothing short of extraordinary—a lavish spa bath retreat that turned our homeowners’ vision into a stunning reality. What was once a cramped, outdated space is now a sanctuary of indulgence, designed to soothe the senses and elevate daily living. Every detail came together beautifully, creating a space that not only met their expectations but went far beyond what they ever imagined possible.
